The UK's health and wellbeing sector benefits from technological advances in many ways and despite numerous opportunities for digital health technologies, competition is high. As an innovator your chance of success depends on various factors and addressing certain hurdles to market.
Our digital health accelerator programme, Simulation for Digital Health (SimDH), provides wrap-around support for digital health innovators positioning them to successfully commercialise their product or service. The programme brings together the extensive academic knowledge within London South Bank University (LSBU) with varied experience of industry partners and makes it available to participants via a range of bespoke support.
Eligibility
If you are a sole trader, start-up, or SME with a business registered in Greater London or registered elsewhere in the UK with an operational address within Greater London (including co-working spaces and virtual offices), then you may be eligible to join our SimDH programme to help get your service or product concept, applicable to the health and wellbeing sector, off the ground.
Digital health accelerator programme overview
The support available in SimDH is delivered via a five-month cohort structure. Participants are given a bespoke pathway, comprising regular one-to-one meetings with expert consultants, personal development opportunities, plus support with product development.
SimDH aligns with participants' goals and timelines - allowing them to set new goals upon completion of the programme. The defined timeline of our cohort means individual innovators will know at what stage of development their business will be upon graduation.
Under the programme participants can develop, test and improve a product, evaluate concepts, build a sustainable business model and secure investment.
Core elements of SimDH
Practical workshops
Workshops are delivered by a range of experts throughout the programme. They are designed to provide participants with a rounded base of knowledge upon which they can continue to develop themselves and their business. Practical issues are addressed, such as how to write a successful grant application to navigating procurement and frameworks.
Personal development
Personal development is a key element of the SimDH programme, which is designed to support individuals in developing the skillsets to be good leaders through lots of opportunities to meet with subject matter experts and entrepreneurs, each bringing their own skillset and perspective. SimDH's five-month cohort enables participants to form, strengthen and use those relationships to the benefit of personal development.
Academic collaboration
As part of the application process, participating businesses can propose projects with experts from across LSBU, to further develop their product and support their progress towards launching to market.
Business development and strategy
SimDH participants will complete the programme with a strong grounding in understanding NHS procurement, intellectual property and digital marketing matters and tap into support to help establish a business model.
Support from product development through to acceptability
The programme is structured to cover all aspects of bringing a digital health innovation to market, from data science, to hardware design and prototyping, medical engineering and software engineering support, to guidance on evidence roadmap/strategy, to product/service evaluation through to usability testing.
For participants with a design prototype and require support to develop a minimum viable product (MVP), or those that already have a MVP and are ready to start independent testing, it is advisable to apply for academic collaboration as part of the programme.
