SBI are proud to hear that alumni Onsee have been announced as winners of Smart Pedal Pitch competition at Velo-City 2021, Lisbon for their REBO innovation.
REBO is a near-miss prevention dashcam for bicycles that prevents near-misses with behavioural change and, allows cyclists to capture dangerous incident details (video footage, plate numbers, time, date, and location) with a single click of the handlebar button. This data can be utilised to detect and develop cycling near-miss hotspot maps, providing important insights for future infrastructure developments to prevent incidents.
Velo-City is the largest cycling conference in the world. As the competition winner, Onsee will have the opportunity to conduct a six-month proof of concept for its product on the streets of Lisbon, backed by a comprehensive package of innovation support from local and international partners.
Onsee was founded by Elizabeth Yu and Crispian Poon in 2019, with the mission to help people feel safe using the best, fastest, and healthiest form of travel in cities - bikes! We worked with Onsee in 2020 to support the development of REBO.
"We are excited to hear about Onsee's progress since graduating from the Sustainable Innovation programme", says SI Senior Project Manager, Ellen South. Safer roads play a key part in supporting sustainable transport in the city and our move to net-zero. If cyclists feel safe on the road, the likelihood of people commuting by bike increases. The recent lockdowns saw a huge increase in UK bike sales, so this innovation could really help reduce emissions by reducing traffic on the roads."
The UK experienced a 22% rise in bike purchases during 2020, with a total of 3.3 million units being sold.
