Collaborating with Miranda McCarthy – business owner and yoga extraordinaire – South Bank Innovation spent some time with Miranda to gain a better understanding of her start-up, experience, and plans for the future. Miranda's involvement with the BIG Growth Innovation Programme has been invaluable, and we want to spotlight that.

About Miranda

I have had Rheumatoid arthritis since the age of two. I have had four hip joints replaced, two knees replaced, and both ankles fused – I guess you can say I am the bionic woman!

I am also a bit of a thrill-seeker and have various hobbies, like horse riding and gliding. I’m currently testing out off-road mobility vehicles – as I long to get out into nature!

What does a ‘typical’ day look like?

I wake up in my west London flat, practice some bed yoga, make a smoothie and hop on Zoom for various meetings. I’m grateful for remote working as the city of London is not the most accessible city to live in.

What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind?

Yoga!

What were you doing before you founded your company?

I was designing virtual reality experiences for pain management.

How did this experience help you build your company/develop your product?

It really feels like an extension of everything I have learned from virtual reality technology to delivering yoga online for three years. Combining the two seems like the perfect synergy for producing something ground-breaking.

Why do you feel it is important for academic institutions and commercial organisations to work together?

I think it’s crucial for academic institutions and commercial organisations to work together because this collaboration bridges the gap between research and real-world application.

Academic institutions offer cutting-edge research, deep expertise, and innovative ideas, while commercial organisations have the resources, market insights, and practical experience needed to bring those ideas to life.

Together they can drive innovation, create impactful solutions, and accelerate the development of new technologies or products. This partnership not only enhances the competitiveness of businesses but also ensures that academic research has a tangible, positive impact on society.

What is your top tip for an enterprise developing a new product?

My top tip for developing a new product is to embrace the unknown and dive in head first. When I launched Adaptive Yoga LIVE, I had no idea how to livestream, but I was determined to make it work. I learned everything I needed along the way. Be a sponge – absorb knowledge as you go, and don’t hesitate to seek out experts who can guide you.

As long as you have a strong vision and the passion to persevere, you can overcome any challenge and bring your idea to life.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work?

Being in nature.

What is your vision for the future of the business and the product, and where do you see the product best placed in the market beyond the BIG Growth programme, including future scholarships and partnerships with LSBU?

My vision for the business is to use insights from the KTP and Innovate UK funding to scale our product and enhance its market position. We plan to develop a value-based care feedback loop by selling our preventative healthcare program to the private sector. This approach will generate revenue that funds public healthcare initiatives, enhancing resources and support for broader population health. Beyond the BIG Growth programme, future scholarships and partnerships with London South Bank University will further drive innovation. Our goal is to establish the product as a market leader, supported by strong academic and commercial collaborations.
